The World Health Organization developed Wheelchair Service Training Packages (WSTP) to assist individuals who provide wheelchairs in the proper techniques of service delivery.  There are four training packages:  Basic, Intermediate, Managers, and Training of Trainers.  While it is desirable for a wheelchair provider to complete the training packages in order – from Basic to ToT – some individuals may be able to begin at a higher level based on experience.

WHO Wheelchair Service Training – Basic Level (WSTP­B)

The World Health Organization (WHO), in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), developed the Wheelchair Service Training Package ­ Basic level. The main purpose of the training package is to develop the minimum skills and knowledge required by personnel involved in wheelchair service delivery. Selected Basic training materials appear below. WHO Wheelchair Service Training – Intermediate Level (WSTP­I)

Following release of the Wheelchair Service Training Package – Basic level (WSTP­B) WHO, in partnership with United States Agency for International Development (USAID), developed the Wheelchair Service Training Package – Intermediate Level (WSTP­I). WSTP­I focuses on addressing needs of people who have severe difficulties in walking and moving around and also have poor postural control. WSTP­I is designed to support the training of personnel or volunteers to provide an appropriate manual wheelchair and cushion for children and adults who need additional postural support to sit upright. Wheelchair Service Training Package for Managers and Stakeholders

Third in the series, this WHO training package consists of two sub­packages:

1. Wheelchair Service Training Package for Managers (WSTPm)
2. Wheelchair Service Training Package for Stakeholders (WSTPs)

The objective of these training packages is to inform managers and stakeholders about the importance and benefits of proper wheelchair service provision in order to develop effective, sustainable programs.

Wheelchair Service Training of Trainers Packages (WSTPtot)

The World Health Organization (WHO) in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAI D) developed a series of four training packages to increase access to wheelchairs. The Wheelchair Service Training of Trainers Package (WSTPtot) is the latest in this series and focuses on developing trainers to deliver the four packages.

The WSTPtot can be delivered in 40 hours and is made up of four modules:

• Core training skills – two days
• Basic Level (WSTPb) – three days
• Intermediate Level (WSTPi) – three days
• Managers and Stakeholders (WSTPm/s) – three days.

All trainees should complete the Core training skills module followed by one of the package-specific modules:

The WSTPtot Basic Level module is targeted at trainers who plan to deliver the WSTPb. Previous experience providing basic-level wheelchairs is essential; the WSTPtot has been designed assuming that trainees are able to demonstrate the competencies taught in the WSTPb.

The WSTPtot Managers and Stakeholders module is targeted at trainers who plan to deliver the WSTPm and WSTPs. Previous experience implementing, managing or evaluating wheelchair services; or working to raise awareness among stakeholders of the need, benefit or development of wheelchair services is essential for trainees to gain the most from the WSTPtot Managers and Stakeholders module.
